1. Gloria Swanson – Photographed by Edward Steichen (1924)
2. My watercolour version of the photo
3. Myself as Gloria Swanson
The NGV is currently showing the exhibition: Edward Steichen & Art Deco Fashion. I have been to see it twice. There are about 200 of Steichen’s photographs that he took from around 1920-1930 while he was employed by Conde Nast, shooting for Vogue and Vanity Fair. Interestingly he is still to date the highest ever paid photographer for both magazines.
All the photographs are in black and white, it would pay to notice the composition of the subjects, (mostly celebrities of the time) and the fashion influences such as, obviously, Art Deco, Turkish turbans, Egyptian influence, the highly plucked and shaped eyebrows and very lip glossed bow lips.
There are also about 30 garments displayed which the majority is owned by the NGV.
NGV: NGV International, 180 St Kilda Road, Temporary Exhibitions, Ground Level
Dates: 18 October – 02 March 2014
Tickets: About $12 for adults, $10 for students.
